Faron Guides Loyola To 3-2 Overtime Win At Illinois State
Sept. 22, 2005 NORMAL, Ill. - Junior midfielder Lindsay Faron (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded the game-winning score in overtime and sophomore midfielder Amy Lomas (Lake Zurich, Ill.) tallied two first-half goals to help Loyola University Chicago women's soccer snap its three-match losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Illinois State. With the win, LU improved its record to 3-4, while ISU falls to 3-3-2 on the season. The Ramblers recorded their first lead in the first half this season in the 14th minute on Lomas' first goal off an assist from sophomore forward Katie Heidenreich (St. Louis, Mo.). Lomas scored less than four minutes later after pushing a penalty kick attempt past ISU goalkeeper Erica Shaw to push LU's advantage at 2-0. ISU scored its first goal in the 18th minute on a tally from Bethany Russ, who scored off a pass from Meghan Boler outside the 18-yard box to slice Loyola's lead in half entering intermission. "We came out of the gates quickly by attacking better than we had in past games, but we just have to figure out how to play straight through for 90 minutes," said Lomas. The Redbirds knotted the score at 2-2 early in the 49th minute on Melissa Routledge's goal from 10-yards out with Boler recording her second assist of the contest to send the match into extra time. Loyola's defense held off numerous chances by ISU in the first five minutes into overtime before Faron put away her first goal of the season in the 98th minute for the victory.
"This win shows the hard work that this team has put in this week and we're looking to continue when the conference season begins," said Faron, who scored her first goal of the year. Illinois State held the advantage over LU in shot attempts (16-12) and corner kicks (6-3) in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Sommer (Carmel, Ind.) tallied a career-high five saves in 55 minutes played and junior Emily Peick (Mendota Heights, Minn.) recorded two saves for Loyola. "It's a good win for us for the facts that we finally got a lead early and that we managed to bounce back in overtime to win," said Loyola head coach Frank Mateus. "This win also helps give our team an emotional boost after our improvement in play over the past two matches." Loyola opens Horizon League play at UW-Green Bay on Monday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. |
