Women’s Golf Opens Season at Notre Dame Invitational

Marissa Capriola posted a 245 for Loyola at the season-opening Notre Dame Invitational

Notre Dame, Ind. (September 5, 2004) – Competing against some stiff competition, including many of the top teams in the Midwest, Loyola University Chicago opened the 2004 fall season by placing 17th in the 17-team field at the Notre Dame Invitational played at Warren Golf Course. The Ramblers totaled a team score of 1,018 to finish off the pace of tournament champion Iowa State (902).

The defending Horizon League champions dug themselves too deep of a hole in the first round of play on Saturday, posting a 346. Loyola was able to improve on that tally in each subsequent round however, including carding a 333 in today’s final round of action.

Loyola’s top two players for the past two seasons, Nicole Puch and Marissa Capriola, each tallied a 245 for the tournament to pace the Ramblers and tie for 52nd overall. Puch was consistent in her play, shooting an opening-round 83 before carding an 81 in each of the final two rounds. Capriola shot a team-best 78 in the second round yesterday.

Rounding out the Ramblers’ lineup was Michelle Puch (86-87-85 = 258), Sarah Van Vooren (95-93-83 = 271) and Melissa Allen (94-96-96 = 286).

Loyola returns to the links next weekend when it competes in the Illinois State Redbird Classic, Sept. 12-13.
