Ryan Stuntz, one of the greatest liberos in collegiate volleyball history, is in his first year as an assistant men's volleyball coach at Loyola. Last year Stuntz was introduced to coaching at the collegiate level as a volunteer assistant at USC for the men's volleyball team.
Stuntz spent the fall of 2005 as the girls' junior varsity coach, and in the spring of 2007 as an assistant coach for the boys varsity team at South Torrance (Calif.) High.
A standout player at Lewis, where he was an All-American first teamer as a sophomore in 2002 while getting 261 digs, Stuntz was named Libero of the Year and earned Second Team All-America honors as a junior in 2003, when he posted a school-record 275 digs (including a school-record 19 in one match). Lewis went 29-5 and won the NCAA title, but later vacated the crown for using an ineligible player. He made the NCAA All-Tournament team and All-MIVA first team in 2003, and then played in the 2003 World University Games as the United States won a bronze medal. As a senior in 2004, he earned All-MIVA first team and MIVA All-Tourney notice while getting 269 digs. Lewis advanced to the NCAA semifinals.
Following his collegiate career, Stuntz played professionally in Switzerland in the 2004-05 season and trained with the USA national team in the summer of 2005.
He prepped at South Torrance High, where he made the 1998 and 1999 South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay team. He was a 2001 second team all-league selection at state semifinalist El Camino Junior College in Torrance (Calif.).
Stuntz is a 2004 graduate of Lewis with a bachelor's degree in sports management. |
