Loyola Drops Double-Overtime Match to Jacksonville, 2-1
Sept. 2, 2007
The Loyola men's soccer team (1-1-0) dropped a heartbreaking double-overtime contest to the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins (1-1-0) by a final score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Loyola Soccer Park. Within the first seven minutes of action, Dolphins senior midfielder Anton Axelsson notched a six-yard pass from the top of the box for the first goal of the match. The Ramblers quickly responded with a total of 12 shots in the first frame, but were unable to capitalize. At the 39-minute mark, senior Keum Sung Kim broke the shutout with a free kick from 18-yards out. Kim's goal knotted the score at 1-1 going into the second half. In the second period, LUC out-shot the Dolphins 7-3, but Jacksonville's keeper, sophomore Matt Gilman, did not allow anything to get past him, as he recorded four saves in the second frame, thus sending the match into the first overtime period. Neither team was able to score in the first portion of overtime. A total of 61 minutes passed between the tying and game-winning goals. With nine minutes left to play in the second overtime frame, Axelsson recorded his second goal of the afternoon, shooting a tight angle shot from the left side to end the game in 100-minutes of play. Despite losing the match, the Ramblers out-shot the Dolphins 21-6, while Jacksonville picked up a total of 27 fouls against Loyola's 18. The Ramblers hit the road to play in the UMKC Tournament this weekend in Kansas City, Mo. on Friday, September 7 at 4:00 p.m. vs. UMKC and Sunday, September 9 at 11:30 a.m. vs. Oral Roberts, respectively. The Maroon and Gold return to Loyola Soccer Park on Wednesday, September 12, when they take on Eastern Illinois. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. |
