5/2/2005

Nicole Puch shot a 165 (82-83) during the first day of play at the Horizon League Championships

GALENA, Ohio (May 2, 2005) - In less than ideal conditions, the Loyola University Chicago golf teams competed in the opening day of play at the Horizon League Championships at the Royal American Golf Club. The Rambler women, who are defending their 2004 league title, sit third with a 695 after 36 holes, just 13 strokes behind Youngstown State for second place. Butler leads the way with a 655. On the men's side, the Ramblers posted a 623, a mere one stroke behind sixth-place Youngstown State.

Senior Nicole Puch carded a 165 (82-83) and is tied for third place after a day of competition. Michelle Puch (90-86) sits tied for 12th while Sarah Van Vooren (89-88) and Rachael Sinnen (91-86) are tied for 14th place. Marissa Capriola had an uncharacteristic day, firing a 197 (105-92).

Mike Wieland shot a one-over-par 73 in the second round of play today and leads Loyola with a 36-hole score of 154 (81-73), which is good for 19th place. Keith Nelson (79-76) and Frank Linquist (81-75) rank tied for 22nd and 24th, respectively, while Aaron Harter tied for 29th with a 158 (82-76). Dan Mattingly carded a 163 (85-78).

The teams conclude play at the championships tomorrow morning.
