Detroit Snaps Loyola's Winning Streak With 73-59 Victory

1/29/2005

DaJuan Gouard, who finished with 10 points at Detroit, scored his 500th career point in a 73-59 loss

DETROIT (January 29, 2005) - Loyola University Chicago (6-14, 4-6 Horizon) saw its two-game winning streak snapped with a 73-59 loss to Detroit (8-11, 5-4 Horizon) this afternoon at Calihan Hall. Senior guard DaJuan Gouard netted his 500th career point in the defeat, however.

Detroit shot the lights out in the first half, hitting 62 percent (16 for 26) of its shots from the field, including 8 of 15 from beyond the arc, while the Ramblers connected on just 1 of 13 shots from long distance. The Titans closed the half with a 10-4 run to take a 44-30 lead into the break.

Loyola opened the second period by scoring six of the first eight points, four coming from senior Anthony Smith, to close the gap to 46-36. After Detroit built the lead back up to 54-38, Blake Schilb scored six of Loyola's points in an 8-3 run to get within 11 at 57-46 with 11:34 left, but the Ramblers would get no closer the rest of the way.

The Titans controlled the boards, outrebounding Loyola, 39-23, while shooting 48 percent from the field for the game. Loyola converted only 3 of its 25 (.120) attempts from three-point territory on the afternoon.

Gouard tallied his 500th career point with a basket at the 17:58 mark of the second half, and the senior guard has now scored in double figures in each of his five games since returning from a knee injury.

Schilb led the Ramblers with 14 points and added five rebounds, running his streak of consecutive games in double digits in scoring to 14. Majak Kou chipped in 11 points, while Gouard and Smith finished with 10 points apiece. Brandon Cotton led Detroit with a game-high 19 points.

Loyola continues its three-game road swing when it travels to Butler on Feb. 3.
