  Shay Boyle

Shay Boyle

Player Profile

Position:
Assistant Coach

Alma Mater:
Notre Dame (1999)

Shay Boyle enters his third season as an assistant coach at Loyola and enters his sixth season as a member of Jim Whitesell's staff. From 2002-04, he served as assistant coach at Lewis under Whitesell, where he helped guide the Flyers to an impressive 47-15 (.758) overall record, a 29-2 home mark and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. At Loyola, he works primarily with the Rambler backcourt.

Last winter, Boyle helped Loyola to its first 20-win season since 1984-85, as the Ramblers racked up a 21-11 record and finished in third place in the Horizon League with 10 circuit wins, also the most since 1984-85. The Ramblers achieved several milestone victories in 2006-07, posting a 74-71 victory at No. 15 Butler on Feb. 22, 2007 for their first decision over a nationally ranked team since 1986 and the first win over the Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse since 1989. Loyola also posted its first win at Calihan Hall since 1992.

Boyle's work paid dividends on the defensive end of the floor as the Ramblers surrendered only 64.8 points per game, the lowest mark by a Loyola team since 1950-51. With 40 wins since the start of the 2005-06 season, Loyola trails only Butler among Horizon League schools. With Boyle's help, guard Blake Schilb earned First Team All-Horizon League honors for the third straight year and also captured National Association of Basketball Coaches First Team All-District 11 accolades. Schilb capped a great career by participating in the NABC All-Star Game at the 2007 Final Four in Atlanta, the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational Tournament and the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando.

Schilb finished his career as the only player in Rambler history to accumulate over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists, while fellow guard Majak Kou also topped the 1,000-point plateau and earned Horizon League All-Defensive Team honors for the second straight year.

In Boyle's first season as an assistant coach at Loyola, he helped the Ramblers to a 19-11 mark. During the 2005-06 campaign, Loyola also got off to its best start since 1965-66, winning seven of its first eight contests and nine of its first 11. Furthermore, with Boyle's assistance, the Ramblers established a single-season school record by draining .754 of their attempts from the charity stripe, which ranked them among national leaders. Along the way to a third-place finish in the Horizon League, Loyola knocked off Butler and also registered non-League wins over Bradley and Purdue.

Boyle was instrumental in helping Schilb develop into Loyola's first All-American since Alfredrick Hughes in 1984-85, as he earned honorable mention accolades. Schilb also captured First Team All-Horizon League honors, as well as FoxSports.com Third Team Mid-Major All-America recognition, while Leon Young was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team and Kou earned All-Defensive Team status.

During the 2003-04 campaign, Boyle helped direct the Flyers to a 24-7 record and their first Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship in 16 years. Lewis earned the #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. He was extensively involved in the team's scouting and recruiting efforts and his on-floor coaching duties focused on developing the Flyers' perimeter players.

While at Lewis, Boyle coached Monta McGhee, the GLVC Player of the Year and a First Team NCAA Division II All-American who is currently playing professional basketball in Germany. He also coached Sidney Holmes, who is currently playing professionally in Europe.

In his first season at Loyola, Boyle coordinated the day-to-day activities of the basketball office. His responsibilities included film exchange, video editing, on-campus recruiting visits and academic coordination. He was also the director of the Rambler Shootout and the Jim Whitesell Loyola Basketball Camp. His efforts were instrumental in the formation of the Loyola student support group, the Rambler Rowdies.

A 1999 cum laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Boyle earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a double major of marketing and computer applications. Boyle spent three years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he served as a global technology consultant. Boyle earned a master's degree in business administration from Lewis in May 2004. He is also a 1995 graduate of Weber High School in Chicago where he was a four-year member and team captain of the basketball team, and an all-conference baseball player.

During the 2001-02 season, he assisted the varsity basketball team at Notre Dame High School in Niles, Ill., helping guide the Dons to a 24-4 record, and regional and East Suburban Catholic Conference championships.

Boyle also has extensive experience working at prominent camps. Formerly the director of the Lewis Flyer Summer Basketball Camps, he coached at the Ray Meyer Basketball Camp and has worked camps at Notre Dame and Duke. He also has served as a team leader at the Chicago Bulls Training Academy in Lisle, Ill.

He and his wife Anne-Michele reside in Chicago.
