Men’s Cross Country Captures Third Consective Title at Sean Earl

Women’s team seizes a fifth place finish

Shawn Lucas placed 12th overall to lead Loyola to its third straight men's title at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational

Chicago, Ill. (October 2, 2004) – The Loyola men’s cross country team captured their third consecutive Sean Earl Invitational crown this afternoon at Montrose Beach defeating 24 teams in the men’s gold division. The women’s cross country team also did well, placing fifth out of 24 teams in the women’s gold division.


Leading the Ramblers to their third title was junior Shawn Lucas who finished the 8k course in 24:56 and in 12th place. Close behind Lucas was Sam Romanoski with another strong finish of 25:04 in 15th place. Soon after teammates Brent Cunningham (25:17) and Eduardo Borjon (25:19) crossed the finish line. Adding to the title finish were Andy Sbertoli, Justin Motkowicz and Andrew McQuillan.


For the third meet in a row this season, sophomore Maureecca Lambert had a team high finish on the women’s side. Lambert finished in an impressive third place with a time of 17:31 in the 5k course. Following closely behind Lambert, Amanda Domich came in at 17:53. Rounding out the Ramblers were Anna Hinterschied in 38th place, Rachel Hansen in 58th place, Sara Covert, Courtney Tumpach and Christine Lubovich. Seizing the women’s gold title was Marquettte University and the individual gold title won by Leah Rygh (17:24) from DePaul University.


In the men’s maroon division the team title was seized by UW-Parkside, while the individual title was taken by Mike Sawicki (24:52) from Otterbein College. UW-Parkside’s Cal Kromm and Paul Gutmann were the top two finishers for the team. The women’s maroon division team and individual titles were captured by Ferris State and Ferris State’s Jenny Irwin.


Varsity Boys high school division title was snared by Glenbard South, as well the individual title from Bruce MacTaggart a Glenbard South student. The varsity girls title was taken by Wheeling High School and Wheeling’s Amber Stack nabbed the individual title. Lyons Township won the frosh/soph men’s title and Whitney Young’s Andrew Santillo captured the individual title. In the frosh/soph division, Oak Park – River Forest High School grabbed the team title, while Michelle Teague from Proviso West High School won the individual title.


In the open 5k race, Paul Harkins was the winner with an outstanding time of 15:42. The 2k elementary race was taken by Bob Muuzikowski with a time of 7:41. The elementary boys and girls titles were won by Latin Elementary.
